I was led to the exploration of masks during my stay in the Sewon Art Residency in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Various types of face shields are used in theatrics, religious ceremonies and in everyday life.  Masks in a contemporary context have become a functional tool instead of an aesthetic garment. Surgical masks are present in everyday life, as opposed to the masks which are used in religious ceremonies or in theatrics. Even though they are used as a means of preventing infection or protection against dust and other elements, they shape a person’s aesthetic, even if it is unintentionally.
